Snowville Lodge No. 159, A.F. & A.M.

Snowville, Virginia

Snowville Lodge No. 159 was chartered on December 13, 1865. Nine members of McDaniel Lodge No. 86; four members of Henry Clay Lodge No. 165; and one member from Lodge No. 49 (the name and location of this Lodge is not known for certain, but the only existing Lodge No. 49 at that time was Greenbrier Lodge in Lewisburg, Virginia, currently West Virginia) signed the petition. When the Lodge first started it met on the top floor of a feed mill beside Little River, on the edge of Snowville.

In the mid 1800's Snowville was in her prime. It was somewhat of a Across roads of all the neighboring communities, having several stores, a theater, feed mill, post office, blacksmith and an iron foundry in addition to its Masonic Lodge. The Lodge was named after the founder of the community, Asial Snow, who was also a Mason.

The Lodge building is a small wooden frame structure, approximately twenty-five by thirty feet. Originally it faced an alley or small street off of the main street. It was moved into its present position facing the main road, state route 693, by the use of logs and mules.

In 1961, Allisonia Lodge No. 218 lost its meeting place because the building was sold. Snowville and Allisonia merged on October 25, 1961. Several pieces of Lodge furniture from Allisonia Lodge are still being used.
