Pythagoras Lodge No. 239, A.F. & A.M.
Pulaski, Virginia
A Lodge to be known as Pythagoras Lodge was granted a dispensation by the Grand Master of Masons in Virginia, Most Worshipful Ruben Morrell Page, on December 20, 1882, to meet at Martins Station in Pulaski County, Virginia.
Pythagoras Lodge was assigned the number 239 when chartered on December 12, 1883. This was one of five Lodges chartered on that date. The appointed officers were:
James B. Caddall Worshipful Master Pulaski Lodge No. 118
Charles Lewis Teany Senior Warden Henry Clay Lodge No. 165
Thomas J. Thomas Junior Warden
In 1885, the officers of Pythagoras Lodge No. 239 requested a duplicate charter from the Grand Lodge of Virginia, stating that the charter of the Lodge had been lost. The Grand Lodge issued a duplicate charter at no charge. This Lodge has been in a number of different locations from 1885 until 1948 when the present building was constructed. Forming the One Hundred Club paid for the temple. The temple was dedicated on August 11, 1964, by Most Worshipful Millard H. Robbins, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia, assisted by Right Worshipful Dr. Walter A. Porter, Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Virginia.
Masonry has been active in Pulaski in many ways. The cornerstones of many of the Churches and other buildings have been laid with Masonic Ceremony. Brethren of this Lodge have served with honor in all the wars and conflicts of this great Country.
A Royal Arch Chapter was chartered on December 25, 1896, and Pulaski Chapter No. 133 Order of the Eastern Star was chartered on June 18, 1947.
In 1963, a committee was appointed to assemble and publish a history of Pythagoras Lodge No. 239. This book concludes with the year ending December 1964.
