Elbert Muncy Lodge No. 298, A.F. & A.M.

                                                             Rocky Gap, Virginia

In 1930 a group of Master Masons living in the vicinity of Rocky Gap, Virginia saw the need for a Masonic Lodge.  They proceeded to draw up a request for a dispensation to work as a Masonic body at Rocky Gap, Virginia.

The first official meeting of Elbert Muncy Lodge was held on March 22, 1930. A dispensation was granted on March 12, 1930, from the Grand Lodge of Virginia. The meeting was held in a room located on the second floor of the old bank building.

On December 27, 1930, the first bylaws were adopted and the Lodge began to operate as a constituted Lodge on February 28, 1931.

The Lodge continued to grow steadily until around 1942, when many of the Brethren were either called to war or forced to leave the area to seek employment. For the period 1942 thru 1951, only five new members were raised. During this period, few stated meetings were held and it was feared that the Lodge would lose its charter. However, in 1952 the Lodge started to grow at a slow but steady pace.

In 1957, the Lodge decided to build a Masonic hall, which would consist of the second floor of a new building that Brother J. H. Lambert was planning to construct. The building committee estimated that it would require approximately $5,000 for the necessary materials. Elbert Muncy Lodge began conducting meetings in the newly constructed hall and the Lodge was rededicated on November 27, 1964.

On February 1, 1973, Brother Lambert died and his will left the ownership of the building to the Lodge.
