From: Zeta Wilson Peterson, daughter of Luella Baumbach Wilson Thursday March 29, 2007 10:18 AM. You have made a "HUGE" difference with your web site, bringing hundreds of cousins back together.   I've found 3-4++ cousins I would never have known if It hadn't been for you.  I had heard as a small child something about a distant gr grandfather being honored by a King. You helped put the puzzle pieces together. I continue to be amazed by the Famous Baumbach....the first time I saw his picture I nearly fell off my chair as the resemblance to my mother's brothers is amazing.  And, I have two male cousins who also resemble him. I just want to also say how thankful I am for you and everything that you have done. It's more than just for our Baumbach family, it's your business, too. Have a wonderful Day, William !!  And, God Bless You !!

From: Amy Baumbach Sent: Monday, December 19, 2005 8:32 AM. This reminds me of 3 years ago when I sent out JC and Tina's request and cried when I received all of your emails.

From: Jennifer Baumbach Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2001 2:58 PM As it turns out I email-ed one of the people who left a message on your guest book, and found a great great uncle. So thank you very much.

I would love to talk to Robert Carl Olsen. I am a gr gr grandaughter of Carl Baumbach, the minister at Fall Creek Trinity Lutheran church. I took a few pictures of it yesterday-(4-19-08) and decided to Google him to see if I could obtain more information, and Bob Olsen's message came up. I have the silver tea set and the china cupboard in my home, that the congregation made/purchased for Carl and Fredericka for their 20th or 25th wedding anniversary. (don't know which one) I am also interested in the German ancestry, if you care to share. thanks a lot, julie

Hello my name is Kori Westfall, my grand mother was Majorie Louise Baumbach. She was born in Madison wi. I had started a family tree years ago while my grandmother was still alive. Unfortunately after her passing I had a computer crash and lost most of my research with it. I know we are decendents of Guido of the twin brothers who came from germany. Anything that you have and would be willing to share would be great. I am trying to get pictures, and a tree together for my mother for her birthday as this will be the first birthday that my mother will not have her mother here. Unfortunately anyone who in the family that knew of the baumbach history has passed. I love this site, hope to hear from anyone soon. Thanks

BAUMBACH:

Following received from the Parish Register of Webestedt (Kingdom of Saxony).... or Germany, they stated we are descended from Helmerich Baumbach 1330-1369, Lord of the Castle of Rothenburg on the Fulda River a few miles south of Kassel Hesse; the village is Nentershausen (below Tannenberg). Our branch is the "Reinhard" branch which is my grandfather's middle name.

They were reformed, Lutheran Hessian, original Nobility with the parent house of the same name in a village near Rothenburg on the Fulda River which is first documented with her degnus de Baumbach, Knight 66 in 1246 (records are in the state archives of Marburg cf also dr landuthe Hessian Knightly Castles and their owners Kassel 1836 and begins the family roots with Hemericus de Baumbach, Knight of the Castle in Rothenburg, 1295-1316. The descendants or issues belong to the old-Hessian Knighthood Coat-of-Arms, etc.

The family re-formed and a foundation was started in 1903. They are trying to hold annual reunions at the Kassel. www.baumbach.com
WW I and WWII, and Hitler controling Germany prevented a lot of contact between the family.

I had heard of this ancestor as a child.... we just didn't have the Parish Records then (post world war years).

I am trying to connect the links and go back and re-capture the dates to before the 1700s:

> George Christoph Baumbach born 10/26/1772 Weberstedt, Kingdom of Saxony
> Johann Georg Baumbach born 7/4/1803 Weberstedt, Kingdom of Saxony
> George Frederich Wilhelm Baumbach born 6/11/1834 in Webersted, Kingdom of Saxony
> William George Frederich born 11/26/1865 Stratford, Ontario, Canada
> Lorenz Reinhard Baumbach born 3/22/1900 in Nebraska

This website is great. My g-grandmother was Lena Bambach - Her family immigrated to Michigan area soon after WW I, I am assuming this is when their name may have been altered because of American anti-German feelings that were circulating at that time. She married a Meharg and moved to Canada- London Ontario area (where I am from). Unfortunately g-grandmother spoke little of her childhood or ancestors so family info was lost- I'm just in the infancy of trying to find out more about my ancestors.

My grandmother was Esther Baumbach. Her mother was Margarete and I think her father was William. Sometime as a young man, her father walked from Canada to get to Nebraska. My great-grandmother Margarete died after childbirth (daughter also Margarete,) and my greatgrandfather remarried and they had more children. My grandmother had a sister named Clara and some brothers (one named Edwin) and Margarete and then some 1/2 sisters and brothers. (a half-sister named Thelma, I think.) She married Jake Breitling in Nebraska when she was 16. Her sister Clara, married August Breitling. Baumbach is an unusal name and I have very little in the way of family details other than my grandmother Esther, and her father were not close or friendly; and by all accounts, he was a very strange kind of person. Grandma talked alot but not much about her parents other than she really missed her Mother. Her childhood was very hard. I think she grew up in or around McCook, Nebraska and my mother was born there in 1931. Her name is Phyllis Breitling. I'd love to hear from anyone who might know about this branch of the Baumbachs. Thanks Brenda Brittain Moses Lake, Washington

I'm the great-great-granddaughter of Guido & Dorothea Katzman Baumbach, who are buried in Middletown, Pennsylvania, USA. My maternal Grandmother, Flora Sellers was the youngest child of John & Eleanore Baumbach Sellers. Elearnore was the 8th child of Guido & Dorothea. Guido was born in 1825 in Germany and immigrated to the USA in his early 20s. I'm not sure how old Dorothea was when she immigrated to the USA from Germany. She was born in 1831. My home address is 100 Sharon Rd., Enola, PA 17025-1829, USA. If you have any information on either Guido or Dorothea before they came to America, I would be interested in receiving it. I am not related to any Von Baumbach, but have bought property in Munster South Africa. The history of Munster is that Walter von Baumbach was the owner of the farm where this town started. The caravan park is called the Mittenwald caravan park. Does anyone have more info on the history and the roots of Walter in South Africa?

I just found this Baumbach site and want to include my family information. My maiden name was Baumbaugh, but the original name from Germany was Baumbach. My gr-gr grandfather was Reinhardt Baumbach from Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany and he was a career Hessian soldier. He was born in 1828 and landed in America on May 27, 1861 having traveled from Bremen on the ship Terese landing in New York and then on to Johnstown, Pa. where he was guaranteed employment with the Emmerling Brewery. Traveling with him were his wife Anna and their children Friedrich, Heinrich, Cathrina, Elise, Anna and Philipp. He served in the Civil War having been paid by a doctor to take the doctor's place. He suffered an extensive injury and lived off a pension until his death on July 4, 1882 when he committed suicide. His name was changed from Baumbach to Baumbaugh after coming to America. I don't know anything about the family when they lived in Germany and would love to hear from anyone who could add to my family information. This a great site and I have enjoyed reading about the castle which I never knew existed and, also, everyone's comments.

Hello Bill, thanks for the return eMail. Will contact those in charge of the castle a little later this month. Needless to say, Beth is quite inthused !! Found the notes of Calla Baumbach Spencer ,my paternal grandmother, who was quite a record keeper. Evidently a left-over from her early "School Marm" vocation. I will try to write it as she has it down on paper..

Grandpa Baumbach's History

John Sebastian Baumbach was born at Hunfeld, Kurhessen, Gremany-January 20 1837.
His father was Henry Anthony Baumbach. His mother - Ursula (Gotterdam) Baumbach.
Eldest sister,- Hildegarde, marriedin Germany to Professor Wehner. Musician.
Eldest brother,- Dominick, Married in Germany
Second brother,- Barthelmew, married Lines in Brazil, South America. Had 8 children.
Secong sister,- Carolyn - married Emil Eberhardt. (Concert
singer). Lived in Texas. Had one son (died).
Third brother-Wendel - Batchelor. Died in Germany
Third sister-Emma - Married to Mr. Whippery. Lived in St. Louis Mo. Had 2 children.
Fourth sister,- Charlotte - Married Henry Beck. Lived in New York C. Had 3 children.
1. John S. Beck - San Jaun, Porto Rica.
2. Henry Beck, New York City, N.Y.
3. Florence Beck, " " "
Grandpa B - came to U.S.A. at 18 years of age. Married June 20, 1861. died April 4, (Easter Sunday)1915.

Grandmother Spencer, Mary Eliza Thayer, was born, Aug. 25th, 1843 in Woodcock Township, Crawford County, Penna. Died Aug. 8th, 1919.
Her father was Joseph Thayer
Her mother " Clarissa (Swift) Thayer.
Her grandmother was a Baker by name.
Her sister - Clarinda (Thayer) Orr (D)
" " - Esther (Thayer) Stanford later married VonStager (D)
Her brother - Joseph Thayer - Had 3 boys
" " - Nathan Thayer - " 1 girl
" 2 sons
" " - Nelson Thayer - " 10 children

The above was written as close as I could to the spelling and format she had put down in an old spiral bound note book. The pages are all brittel and brown and are a bit hard to decipher as they were written with a real pen. They must be handled with great care as they will crumble to pieces.
There is more linage from there on down to the present available to you if you wish.
I also will send this to my cousin in Harrisburgh and Hal Baumbach who in an avid "Baumbach researcher". He may or may not be aware of the castle and this web site.
Warm family regards; David Spencer

William, I am impressed with your web site. Quite a feat to build, I'm sure....
I am David Spencer, geat grandson of Johan Sebastion Baumbach, born in Hunfeld, Hessen, Germany, circa 1850.
Hunfeld is about 15 kilimeters north east of Fulfa, just inside the border of west Germany. He came to the US in the 1860's I believe. Married Mary Eliza THAYER (see Thayer web site) They lived in Woodcock Twp, Crawford County, PA and was a cheese maker. Had a cheese factory there.
I have a picture of it and also a pic of him and his younger son, Charles Elton, working in it. His youngest daughter, Kitty Caroline (who became known as "Calla", went by that name, and is on her head-stone in Erie Cemetary), Graduated from Edinboro State Teacher's Collage, and taught school in the Union City area, Met Glenn Larue Spencer and wed on her parent's 50th aniversary, 1910.
Charles lived most of his life in UnionCity also, as he and his wife Ethel (Wellmon)are buried. Their children are all gone now, Ward (called Bud) being the last to go in Harrisburg Pa, but his youngest daughter, Kathleen Baumbach , and grand daughter, Briel, still live there.
Calla & Glenn had 2 siblings, Hugh Arlington and Norma Natola (who died in an automobile accident at age 16)
Well, there is some more history for you. Sorry I don't have my family linage book here accessibly or I could have given specific dates now. Contact me later and perhaps I can give you more. I do have info on the family Johan, his mother (Gotterdam) and his siblings.
NOTE: we, Beth and I, are going to Germany this spring, we will go to Hunfeld and nose around, and now that we have YOUR info, we will go to the castle.
Do we have any Baumbach family contacts in that area???
And whom do we contact about the castle???
Family salutations; Dave Spencer, 123 Vail St., Michigan City, IN,46360 Phone; 219-872-0142

Hi, William (and Jennifer), I'm Jennifer's father, Larry Smith, the son of Mary Baumbach Smith, of Charlevoix, Michigan.  Her father, Rolland Baumbach, was born in the Grand Rapids Michigan area, called Berlin at the time and later changed to Marne, to one Friedrich Baumbach, who immigrated to America with a brother some time in the 1860s. I have some information suggesting he came from  town called Westerhof, which may be  in East Germany or up near Hannover. Rolland lost touch with his father at an early age (Friedrich deserted the family) and never told any of his ten children where in Germany Fred had come from. I'd like to know if you have any information about any Baumbachs from Westerhof. Rolland's wife, Mary Waldruff, who is Jennifer's great grandmother, was born in June 1884. Rolland was born Dec. 9, 1877. Thank you. Larry Smith

My dad's name is Jeremy D. Baumbach. Long long time ago my grandma went to Germany to see the castle and she said that the Baumbachs there are related to us by blood. So I thought it was awesome. She also has pictures.

Do you know how to tell how we are related to them? Like maybe a family tree or something?

Hello again to all my Baumbach friends and family. I have visited this site several times but haven't found a connection - but have new info to help see if any of you can respond. My Gr.Gr.Grandfather is William August Baumbach and came to America aprox 1888 with wife Anna Marie Jacobs. They came over with 4 children: William Henry (born appraox 1883), Joseph John (born 1884), Andrews (1885) and Anna (1887). Settled in Montello, WI and worked at granite factory there. Had two more children: Clara (1889) and Mary (1892). The oldest two sons (William and Joseph(my Gr.Grandfthr) moved up to Mellen, WI and both married women in 1906 there. William married Hariette and Joseph married Ruby Isadore Carter. Joseph John had several children - the oldest being John Joseph (my grandfather) who moved to Calif. If anyone is related to any of the above people I would love to hear from you to fill in gaps with each other. Thank you.

My Great-Grand Father was Otto J. Bombach, Sr; he was born in Perlebery, Germany in 183l.  A cousin tells me that his father brought him to the States to NYC,but returned to Germany.  When he (Otto) was 19 he ran away and came to the States via Galveston and settled in San Antonio for a while.  He married some lady that was about 18 hrs his senior.  Some how or for some reason he ended up in Jimenez, Mexiso where he married Hipolita Salmon (19 yrs his junior) and brought to Old Mesilla, NMex.  They had John, Charles (my grandpa), Henry, Otto, Elena, and Margaret).  They are both buried at the San Jose Cemetry in Las Cruces, NMex.

This same cousin tells me that Otto changed his name when he became an American citizen in 1852, from Baumbach to Bombach!

Nice to hear from you and Happy, Happy, Happy Holidays,

Ray

My great great grandmother was Elisabetha Johannetta Baumbach, daughter of Count Friedrich Wilhelm Baumbach (1763-1818) and Christiane Momberger (1762-1836.) Elisabetha Johannetta's siblings were Henrich Wilhelm Baumbach (1787-1858), Friedrich Ludwig (1789-1797), Elisabetha Catharina (1794-1821), Friedrich Ludwig (1797-?), and Johann Christian Carl (1802-1863.) Her grandfather was Count Johann Bathasar Baumbach. Her father Count Friedrich Wilhelm Baumbach founded the saltworks at Beustischer. Elisabetha Johannetta Baumbach married Johann Jost Fritz in Trais-Horloff, Hesse Darmstadt on 20 Apr 1829. She died 20 Mar 1846. Shortly after, her family emigrated to the United States and settled in Johnstown, PA. There were 4 children: Henry, John, Elisabeth and Adolph. John and Adolph were survivors of the Johnstown Flood of 1889, but John lost 3 daughters, a daughter-in-law and 4 grandchildren. John also lost his business to the flood.

Very nice website. I stumbled upon it while trying to find information about a particular Baumbach. You may find it interesting that a man named Friedrich von Baumbach-Nentershausen of Kassel was implicated as a member of the notorious Illuminati conspiracy in the 1780's in Germany. His code-name in the secret order was "Zamolxis."

Baumbach ancestors

 Drear William:

By chance I learned that there is a castle formerly owned by the early Baumbach family in Nentershausen.

I have been gathering data about my ancestors and would like to learn if you might have information to add to mine.

My great grandmother was Anna Martha Baumbach. She was born in 1841 in Farnroda, Thuringen. She lived and died in Germany but her sons and daughter came to the US in the late 1800's.

Any information you might have about her ancestors and how they fit into the Baumbach family would be appreciated.

 Regards;

 Hello Mr. Baumbach,

many greetings from good old Germany.

I am Hans-Dieter Baumbach from the city Erfurt (capital of the landscape and the german federate-state Thueringen - and also the homeland of your ancestors).

My gr-grandfather was the shoemaker Valentin Albert Baumbach, born 1857 in Ebertshausen (nearly 10 km northeast of Meiningen and 25 km southeast of Bad Liebenstein & Schweina).

You have a very very interesting web-site. I found in your guest-book my nephew Matthias (our contact was interrupted before many years) and two Baumbach's (father & son) from Nuernberg also with ancestors in Ebertshausen - now we search the relation.

As I saw your tree, I have wondered, why the wife of Friedrid Baumbach (I believe Friedrich) is written always only Catharine. You have on your web-site the birthrecord of her son Bernhard August and here can I read her complete name: Catharine Margarethe nee Aschenbach.

>From another web-source I know a horseshoesmith Friedrich Baumbach and a Catharine Margarethe Aschenbach with a son Bernhard August (b. 1855 in Meiningen and also a horseshoesmith). Friedrich have a sister Margarethe (b. 26.1.1837 in Meiningen). Their parents are Alfred Thomas Baumbach (b. 1800) and Catharina Hart (b. 1805 in Meiningen). All died in the USA.

 Many greetings     hans-dieter.baumbach@t-online.de

THEY WENT TO PHILADELPHIA WHERE THEY MARRIED SISTERS LATER SETTLED IN MIDDLETOWN. HENRY THEN WENT TO WISCONSIN WITH HIS FAMILY. ANYONE WHO KNOWS ANYMORE INFORMATION ABOUT GUIDO I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW HOW GUIDO'S FAMILY STEMS FROM THE BAUMBACH CASTLE?

Well, to think I grew up in Des Peres, Missouri, thinking my immediate family were the only Baumbachs in the world.Nobody at our school shared our family name except for my own sisters and cousins. I unconsiously tuned in to that name and looked for it in my travels in the military and in the newspapers and books I read in great numbers. When I was tipped off to this site by one of my five sisters, I thought after reading through the guest book, that no one had made mention of a couple of Baumbachs that made the history books. One was Werner Baumbach, who was a major strategist and commanding officer in the the air war for Germany in World War 2. Another Baumbach who distinguished himself was Harland L. Baumbach, who was among those reieving a scientific and technical award in the 1957 Academy Awards for his contribution in developing an automatic printer light selector. I'm sure there must be more Baumbachs out there that have made their mark in the archives of various histories. So it might be interesting if some of the Baumbachs, could share their knowledge on this site of other Baumbachs that have distinguished themselves in some way.I read in an advertisement for the rodeo held on on the fourth of July week-end, 2004, at Mark Twain Lake in Missouri, the results from the 2003 rodeo, and it turned out a guy named Dustin Baumbach and his partner had won the team roping event. So we know at least one of the Baumbach clan turned out to be a cowboy. That was my dream growing up, but it ended when they took Roy Rogers and Gene Autry and Wild Bill Hickock off of Saturday morning TV. This site has made my day , it is too much to absorb in one visit so I will be coming back alot. Thanks

My grand mothers parents were here before the civil war and she married a Spangler.Would be interested on how to obtain the family crest if obtainable.

I'm just beginning to look into my late father's side of my family, and have hit nothing but dead ends. I don't know much about him, or relatives on his side, but do remember stories about our german descent, and how the spelling of our last name was changed by the immigration officials. My wish is to find my families lost (at least to me) history. His name was Rodger Rudy Bomback. Any information would be extremely helpful, and if the name doesn't "ring a bell", I thank you for your time.

I am the descendant of George and Hulda(Eikenhorst) Baumbach.  George's parents were John and Mary Baumbach of North Platte, Nebraska.   All are deceased - Hulda most recently in 1990. George/Hulda had 7 children, 6 lived to Adulthood. 1 Died in WWII in Car Accident. 5 Lived here in Colorado for the past 50 years, or so. Alvin, Evelyn, Helene, George,Jr, Charles(Chuck).  Evelyn and Chuck died in 2003. Al is my father, and remains with his brother George and sister Helene. We all generally live along the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, generally in the greater metro Denver area. Our German ancestor came to USA around 1840 on board a ship, to escape rather mean spirited  "foster" parents he left behind in Germany. Bruce Baumbach in Sandy, Utah knows a lot more if you want to contact him.

I really enjoy your website. My mother was a Baumbach, Gertrude Elizabeth Baumbach Kline, born May 23, 1913 in Baltimore, Maryland, daughter of Andrew Baumbach and Louisa Shuman Baumbach. Andrew was one of twin sons of Amandus Baumbach and Margaret Adams (Andrew and Charles), born in Washington DC in the 1860's I believe. I have seen them listed in the family email. My mother really enjoyed all the family information as she had been told of Amandus coming to America from a German town with a castle. He may have been a tailor or an apprentice there. I know nothing more of his life.

Hello one and all, Greetings form Wisconsin! I am Robert Carl Olson, grandson of Carl Paul Lincoln Baumbach. My aunt Jeannie (Baumbach) Jahnke, gave me this web address, and ever since I have been obsessed with my Baumbach heritage. First, I would like to thank William James Baumbach II for this website. I never knew that there were so many Baumbachs around the world. The information presented here is just great! The information on Tannenberg castle, and the possibility of having family there is absolutely extraordinary! I am excited beyond words! I have a very deep passion for Germany; I was stationed there for 2 ½ years while I was in the U.S. Army in the early 80’s. I became very active in the community where I was stationed…Babenhausen. I played in the city orchestra, and spent all of my free time in the company of my German friends. Now, twenty years later I find that my attempt to trace our family history dead ends in Darmstadt Germany. I was very well acquainted with Darmstadt while I was stationed nearby…and I was not aware that my great, great grandfather Carl Baumbach came from there. At any rate, we are looking to trace things as far back as possible, and hopefully within the walls of Tannenberg. The fartherst we can find is Carl Baumbach, born 04 FEB 1850 in ,,,, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany, and died 14 DEC 1931 in ,, Fall Creek, Eau Claire Co, WI, USA. He was buried 17 DEC 1931 in St. James Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Fall Creek, Eau Claire Co, WI, USA. He married Fredricke WOLTER 1872. She was born 23 JAN 1850 in ,,,, Holstein, Germany, and died 09 NOV 1939 in ,, Fall Creek, Eau Claire Co, WI, USA. She was buried 12 NOV 1939 in St. James Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Fall Creek, Eau Claire Co, WI, USA. A couple of further facts: Carl Baumbach was a Lutheran Pastor at St. James Trinity Lutheran Church, Fall Creek, WI. Carl Baumbach immigrated to the U. S. in 1867. I would appreciate any and all help in tracing this back further. I also have one more question. Does anyone have a description of the symbolism of our family crest? I am curious to learn what is behind the symbols that make up the crest. I have searched high and low, but I came up empty handed. Well, thank you all, and I look forward to meeting some of you in the future. Bob Olson

Subject: am I related to the Baumbach Castle ??

Hi Bill. I don't actually know for certain that we are related. But the name Baumbach is not very common and there aren't that many of us. When I saw the picture of the "famous Baumbach" my first immediate reaction was that he reminded me of my Uncles (my mother's brothers). The attached picture (which I just sent earlier) may not be a true representation because often the pictures don't show the true profiles and such. But I was amazed at the resemblance. My cousin Monica from Southern California had the very same reaction I did when she first saw the famous Baumbach portrait. The other gentleman in the white clock with the Baumbach clock didn't seem similar in looks.

I feel that you resemble some of the photographs or people I have seen on the video tape.

I remember my mother telling me when I was a small child that a distant cousin or a distant Aunt of our Baumbach family who lived in Canada had been doing some family research and she had mentioned to my mother or other family members "that some important person...a king or someone had given land to our ancestors". Now that is just word of mouth and my mother passed away when I was only age 17, that is all I remember or know.

These Baumbach relatives lived in and around a village called "Rostock" up near Stratford, Ontario, Canada. My sister and I visited Rostock and found a cemetery there with many, many Baumbach's buried in it and we know that they are our family. In fact,
my father was along with us during this visit. We asked some local people to guide us to the Baumbach's so we knocked on an older Baumbach's door. My dad nearly fainted because he said he could have been a twin to my mother's Uncle Billy. There personalities were similar as well. It almost seems like he was also named William or Bill Baumbach, too.

I wrote down two names of cousins we met back then. I don't even know if they are still around in the area or not, but they were
Harold Baumbach, RR#2, Gads HIll, Rostock, Ontario; and I had an address for Albert Baumbach, RR#5, Stratford, Ontario.

They left Germany apparently around 1851.

I'll forward you two separate family histories. One I got from elderly great aunts and cousins. The other I just recently got from my cousin Bill Baumbach in Nebraska.

To Andy Baumbach, re: his post, My uncle has done a lot of research into the Baumbach family. Go to http://www.mindspring.com/~baumbach/ I copied and pasted the following information from that site. I read your post on the baumbach.com site and thought it rang a bell. There is a photo with this. George J. (Joseph) Baumbach, Sr. was my great-grandfather. --Bethany A. Russell, Leonard, TX (age 30) George Frederick Baumbach born February 10, 1862 date of death not known Photo taken at W. Wilson, Paddington Photo Co., Margaret Terrace, Paddington Green, London George J. Baumbach, Sr wrote on the back: "George Frederick Baumbach. My father's oldest brother. This picture was taken in London, England 3 days before he died. Buffalo Bill sent it to my father also [to] advise [him of] his death". George Frederick Baumbach was employed on one of the European Tours of W. F. Cody's Wild West Show. Buffalo Bill toured Europe in 1887, 1889, and in 1903, a joint tour with Barnum & Bailey's Circus. George's brother, Charles Baumbach supposedly worked for the Barnum & Bailey Circus.

I am the daughter of a Baumbach, now living in Texas. While I knew my family was from Germany and that others in my immediate family had done genealogy into the Baumbach family, I learned an incredible amount of information from this site, and especially the castle video. I never knew I descended from nobles ... pretty neat! Only recently have I become interested in genealogy. I will be doing more research (on both sides of my family tree) and will share it with all of the Baumbachs in our little clan. Best to all.

I think the castle and it's history is very interesting! I love family history and antiques! I was excited when my Grandmother (Luicille Merideth of Cheyenne, WY) told me I was a descendent of the Baumbachs and that we have a castle! My great-grandmother was Martha Schwarz of Sparta, Wisconsin. She was a daughter of a Baumbach, but I'm not sure of his first name--my grandmother knows. I would love to visit the castle!

Ojalá me puedan ayudar. Les pido que me confirmen si les ha llegado esta nota y si no a que e-mail se las puedo hacer llegar. Gracias

I am a granddaughter of Agnes Elizabeth von Baumbach, who married Gottfried Reinholdt Treviranus in the mid-1910's; he died in 1971, she died in the early '90's I believe. I grew up in Virginia, living now in  Canada.

Do you know how I might find a family tree of the von Baumbach's? I have several antique silver spoons with the Baumbach crest on it, and my grandmother's pearls. That's about it.

Thanks - Denya M. Treviranus

Hi I am Louise Spalding. About 1 year and 7months ago I entered a message regarding Wilhelm August Theodor Baumbach, who was born in Gotha Saksen and if anyone knew anything about him. Through the Evang.Luth Church in Augustin germany I found out that he was born February 2 1811 in Gotha, Baptised Feb 7, 1811 in Gotha. His father was Johann Georg Philipp Baumbach and his mothers maiden name was Susanne Magdalene Dietsch. His father was a host at the woodmarket in Gotha. Is there anyone who can tell me anything more about this man who grew up in Gotha then immigrated to Batavia(Djakarta, today) Indonesia and raised a family there. Please e-mail me Thank you

Hi, I'm back. It's me Sarah Baumbach. I would like to know if we have a family tree? I mean then I know if we are actually related, I'm pretty sure we are but you can never be to sure. It's just I only know the Baumbach's in Canada, I'm not sure if I have any relatives in Germany, I think I do but I'm not sure. Do you know Brian William Baumbach, Kevin Baumbach and Bruce Baumbach in Canada? Well Grandpa Bruce died when I was 5 years old, he was my hero, but he's gone now. There's only 3 of us in Canada now. Like with the last name Baumbach that is. Please if you could answer my questions, I would be so happy. I'm 14 years old now and I'm taking German lessons on how to speak your language so that if you are my family I can come see you sometime. I am very proud to be a Baumbach, if you translated our name to "Tree Brook or Stream" would you just cut it down to "brooks?" or something like that?! Please and thank you answer my questions......hopefully you are my relatives because I live with my step dad, brother who isnt really blood related, and my mom and they are all LESLIE'S and I am the only Baumbach in my family house. So like I said I hope we are related. Thanks again.----Sarah

I think you have done a nice job on the site. keep it up. I am 26 and think it is good for people to find out about their ancestors. I live in Wisconsin, and my great great grandfather Eduard moved to the states with his twin brother around WWI, They were musicians and played with a circus and traveled around the country, they eventually split up with one going to Wisconsin (of course) to become a farmer. That is pretty much the jist of the info my Grandpa told me. I live in Milwaukee and run a bar/restaurant.

Hello William: The work you have done on the Baumbach website is terrific. My name is Wade M. Baumbach (47) and I live in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. My Father Edward (76) his father Isaac Baumbach (1890 - 1975) also lived here. My Great Grandfather was Johann Baumbach (1851-1911) He had 12 children from his first wife (Margaret Reimche) and 9 children from his second wife (Margaret Dell). He and his second wife had left Alberta to purchase property in Lodie CA in 1911. They were riding in a car with the land agent when they were hit by a street car and all were killed. They are buried in Lodie. The first family for the most part stayed in Alberta while the second family moved to California.

I have a copy of our family history compiled by Voilet F. Nance dating back to 1792 with my GGG Grandfather Heinrich Baumbach in the Rhineland area of Germany.

Please send me further information on how we may contribute the Castle restoration project.

Thank You

Hello all Baumbachs. I wanted to pass on to all of you that my mother, Roxanne Alice (Riedel) Baumbach passed away suddenly March 9, 2003. My dad is Richard Adolph Baumbach. His father was Adolph Baumbach who was married to Meta Friede. My great grandfather would have been William Baumbach, who was married to Bertha Schamens. William is a son of Henry who came to the United States around 1844 with his twin brother Guido. Guido apparently settled in the Pennsylvania area and Henry came to Wisconsin, where I live. I do not know much else as to who Henry's and Guido's parents were in Stadt Weimer, Saxony Germany. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who can help. The Baumbach Family tree was a passion of mom's and I want to pick-up where she left off. If anyone can help, I would love to hear from any Baumbach's. Thanks Sean Baumbach Madison, WI

My name is Patricia Baumbach, daughter of John Joseph Baumbach, born in Melon, Wisc. Jul 7, 1909. He was the oldest of many children but some died at birth. Living siblings were James, George, and sisters Margaret and Clara. The whole family moved to Riverside, CA., approx 1915. My father's father was Joseph John Baumbach who came to America from Germany when he was six yrs old (approx,. 1883), with his father whom I believed to be William Baumbach but not sure because I cannot find any records of them entering the US. All I know is they settled in and around Melon, WI. From reviewing all the e-mail messages in your system, about half the people came from a man called William who came here from Germany so there must have been a lot of Williams. Joseph married a Ruby Isadore Carter in Wisconsin but she was from Kimball, Wisc. If anyone reads this and has some family history in or around Melon or recognize any of the names - please contact me.

Great site that I just discovered. I am related to same part of the Baumbach clan as history book visitor Zeta Peterson. Her Grandfather Lorenz was a brother of my Grandmother, Margaretha Caroline (in later years she used Margaret). My Grandmother passed away in July of 2000. There is another sibling of her Grandfather and my Grandmother that was not mentioned in her posts. Our Grandparents' father William immigrated to the US from Canada after getting a woman pregnant and then failing to marry her. His parents in Canada, William and Carloine, soon after reported that he had died while away. That is why he has a grave in Canada with a very early date and one in Nebraska. The name of the child from that union escapes me right now, but she subsequently married and had a son, Jay Quartz. Jay spent years doing genealogy research in his homeland in Canada. He always wondered why there was so little information on his grandfather. Quite by accident, he discovered that there had been a decades-long deception. He has very extensive genealogical data on the Canadian side of the Baumbach's. I have lost contact with him but will see if I can locate him and provide a copy to anyone interested. Dear William,

I hope, you don't mind of writing like this because my name is also Baumbach and I'm really surprised about our history. My name is Matthias Kay, I am born in East-Germany in Arnstadt in 1965, a small town near Erfurt. I grow up in Berlin where I studied Music. So I am a musician, now living for further studies in Rotterdam (The Nederlands), where I study Tango music and also play in a Tango band called Cuarteto Gotan. (on the picture at the guitar - this is a Tangoball at the "Café de Kroon" in Amsterdam)

So far, so good. Sorry about my bad english...Oh yes I'm interested in this "Baumbach" domain. Tell me please, what I have to do.

Subject: Tannenberg

Hello William,
My name is Mark Meissner and I live in San Francisco.  Most of my relatives live in a little town called Breese, Illinois.

Last year a man who lives in Newcastle upon Tyne in Britain contacted my cousins in IL to share some letters and documents that were passed down from his great grandmother, Martha Elizabeth  whose maiden name was Meissner . Some of the documents referred to her as being from Neuterhausen and some from Tannenberg. At first it was thought that the Tannenberg meant the Tannenberg Battle site of the Russian defeat in 1914 in Poland as that reference is more easily found in literature.  But when I investigated I discovered the translation was incorrect and that the Neutershausen was really Nentershausen. and  the Tannenberg association made it clear. Some of the documents were letters from MY great grandfather Ludwig/ Louis Meissner (1837-1898) who emigrated to St Louis between 1855 and 1860. In 1861 he was in the Union Army (for six months) and ended up thereafter in Breese.  Martha was married to a 'turner' from Wolfsanger Parish in Kassel in 1855 and several of the documents refer to that process, including her birth certificate from the Church in Nentershausen. She was born in 1832 and was considered a spinster. On one wedding document (they were married in Nentershausen) it refers to her as Martha Eliz Meissner of Tannenberg. Her Father was named as Burkhardt Meissner who was a Shepard or master Shepard depending upon translation. The godmother was the wife of Anton Jordan "lord of the manor'  from Basterode (that being a suspect translation). I had at one point thought that the Manor referred to the Tannenberg itself but after reading of Baumbach's Ludwig I and the Landgreve of Hesse and that history I think that theory is false.  But the fact that Martha was reffered to as 'from Tannenberg' shows some kind of connection. Also, there are siblings of Martha and Louis called Peter and Maria. I'm guessing that Peter was the oldest and Louis therefore had to emigrate as that was the norm at that time. I'm hoping to find if any Meissners are left in the area and am planning to go over to Nentershausen perhaps next year.

I will of course become a member and hopefully convince others in the family to do likewise. Vincent Angus, the relative in Newcastle might also want to support the Tannenberg project. He has possession of the original letters and documents. I think that Tannenberg or Nentershausen might be interested in some of them and I.am going to try and determine that when I go over. Vincent said he wanted to meet me there so he could bring the related documents over with him. They are very impressive , what with their seals and such..

Well,  sorry to take so much of your time but I was very excited to see that there was a Tannenberg society.

Mark Meissner

Or, even if we want to send more I/we could send it to you and that would make the ratio even better?

I want to contact our cousin in Newcastle and my cousins in Breese to add some also.

Thanks,

You'll be hearing from me soon.

Hoping to go there next year and am really excited.

By the way, I found a genealogy referring to the Landgrave of Hesse (who evidently 'took over' Tannenberg from your family at some point) who was related to the Counts of Louvain and Brabant, and to the Percy family in Northumberland who figured significantly in English history and are major players in Shakespear's history plays.
