Letters, notes and comments that visitors to this website have sent meAlso included are message from other Baumbachs looking for Baumbachs From: Zeta Wilson Peterson, daughter of Luella Baumbach Wilson Thursday March 29, 2007 10:18 AM. You have made a "HUGE" difference with your web site, bringing hundreds of cousins back together. I've found 3-4++ cousins I would never have known if It hadn't been for you. I had heard as a small child something about a distant gr grandfather being honored by a King. You helped put the puzzle pieces together. I continue to be amazed by the Famous Baumbach....the first time I saw his picture I nearly fell off my chair as the resemblance to my mother's brothers is amazing. And, I have two male cousins who also resemble him. I just want to also say how thankful I am for you and everything that you have done. It's more than just for our Baumbach family, it's your business, too. Have a wonderful Day, William !! And, God Bless You !! From: Amy Baumbach Sent: Monday, December 19, 2005 8:32 AM. This reminds me of 3 years ago when I sent out JC and Tina's request and cried when I received all of your emails. From: Jennifer Baumbach Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2001 2:58 PM As it turns out I email-ed one of the people who left a message on your guest book, and found a great great uncle. So thank you very much. From: artjunkie01@aol.com [mailto:artjunkie01@aol.com] Hey my name is Austin Baumbach. You may have already been contacted by my family. My grandparents are Alvin and Lucile Baumbach, they have 3 sons Alan, Jerry and Brian. Jerry is my father. I would love to have an email address @baumbach.com! Thank you. -Austin J. Baumbach email: Brittain_116@msn.com CommentsThis is for Zeta Peterson or Alice Baumbach Williamson. My Mother, Phyllis Fisher, is your cousin. She is the youngest daughter of Esther M. (Baumbach) Breitling and was born in McCook, Nebraska. She is currently living in Lewiston, Idaho. Zeta, I tried e-mailing you, but it came back, so I will give you some other information. She also has a cousin in California, who is the daughter of Margaret C. Her name is Bernice. My mother is: Phyllis Fisher 127 15th Ave Lewiston, Idaho 83501 Mom's older sister Vila, lives in Weiser, Idaho and they have -2- brothers who are deceased. I will send her this information too. We hope to hear from you. Brenda Brittain email: Brittain_115@msn.com CommentsMy grandmother was Esther Baumbach. Her mother was Margarete and I think her father was William. Sometime as a young man, her father walked from Canada to get to Nebraska. My great-grandmother Margarete died after childbirth (daughter also Margarete,) and my greatgrandfather remarried and they had more children. My grandmother had a sister named Clara and some brothers (one named Edwin) and Margarete and then some 1/2 sisters and brothers. (a half-sister named Thelma, I think.) She married Jake Breitling in Nebraska when she was 16. Her sister Clara, married August Breitling. Baumbach is an unusal name and I have very little in the way of family details other than my grandmother Esther, and her father were not close or friendly; and by all accounts, he was a very strange kind of person. Grandma talked alot but not much about her parents other than she really missed her Mother. Her childhood was very hard. I think she grew up in or around McCook, Nebraska and my mother was born there in 1931. Her name is Phyllis Breitling. I'd love to hear from anyone who might know about this branch of the Baumbachs. Thanks Brenda Brittain Moses Lake, Washington

My maiden name was Baumbaugh, but the original name from Germany was Baumbach. My gr-gr grandfather was Reinhardt Baumbach from Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany and he was a career Hessian soldier. He was born in 1828 and landed in America on May 27, 1861 having traveled from Bremen on the ship Terese landing in New York and then on to Johnstown, Pa. where he was guaranteed employment with the Emmerling Brewery. Traveling with him were his wife Anna and their children Friedrich, Heinrich, Cathrina, Elise, Anna and Philipp. He served in the Civil War having been paid by a doctor to take the doctor's place. He suffered an extensive injury and lived off a pension until his death on July 4, 1882 when he committed suicide. His name was changed from Baumbach to Baumbaugh after coming to America. I don't know anything about the family when they lived in Germany and would love to hear from anyone who could add to my family information. ] -----Original Message----- Hi, William (and Jennifer), I'm Jennifer's father, Larry Smith, the son of Mary Baumbach Smith, of Charlevoix, Michigan. Her father, Rolland Baumbach, was born in the Grand Rapids Michigan area, called Berlin at the time and later changed to Marne, to one Friedrich Baumbach, who immigrated to America with a brother some time in the 1860s. I have some information suggesting he came from town called Westerhof, which may be in East Germany or up near Hannover. Rolland lost touch with his father at an early age (Friedrich deserted the family) and never told any of his ten children where in Germany Fred had come from. I'd like to know if you have any information about any Baumbachs from Westerhof. Rolland's wife, Mary Waldruff, who is Jennifer's great grandmother, was born in June 1884. Rolland was born Dec. 9, 1877. Thank you. Larry Smith -----Original Message----- Hi, I am 11 1/2 years old. I will be 12 in May. My name is Victoria Mae Baumbach. Everybody just calls me Tori. She also has pictures. Do you know how to tell how we are related to them? Like maybe a family tree or something? Love, Tori email: tresselle@msn.com

From: sflory@attglobal.net Drear William: By chance I learned that there is a castle formerly owned by the early Baumbach family in Nentershausen. I have been gathering data about my ancestors and would like to learn if you might have information to add to mine. My great grandmother was Anna Martha Baumbach. She was born in 1841 in Farnroda, Thuringen. She lived and died in Germany but her sons and daughter came to the US in the late 1800's. Any information you might have about her ancestors and how they fit into the Baumbach family would be appreciated. Regards; Stan Flory email: treebrook@hotmail.com CommentsHello from Canada.. Jan -----Original Message----- Hello Mr. Baumbach, many greetings from good old Germany. I am Hans-Dieter Baumbach from the city Erfurt (capital of the landscape and the german federate-state Thueringen - and also the homeland of your ancestors). My gr-grandfather was the shoemaker Valentin Albert Baumbach, born 1857 in Ebertshausen (nearly 10 km northeast of Meiningen and 25 km southeast of Bad Liebenstein & Schweina). You have a very very interesting web-site. I found in your guest-book my nephew Matthias (our contact was interrupted before many years) and two Baumbach's (father & son) from Nuernberg also with ancestors in Ebertshausen - now we search the relation. As I saw your tree, I have wondered, why the wife of Friedrid Baumbach (I believe Friedrich) is written always only Catharine. You have on your web-site the birthrecord of her son Bernhard August and here can I read her complete name: Catharine Margarethe nee Aschenbach. >From another web-source I know a horseshoesmith Friedrich Baumbach and a Catharine Margarethe Aschenbach with a son Bernhard August (b. 1855 in Meiningen and also a horseshoesmith). Friedrich have a sister Margarethe (b. 26.1.1837 in Meiningen). Their parents are Alfred Thomas Baumbach (b. 1800) and Catharina Hart (b. 1805 in Meiningen). All died in the USA. Tabbop@earthlink.net CommentsWell, to think I grew up in Des Peres, Missouri, thinking my immediate family were the only Baumbachs in the world.Nobody at our school shared our family name except for my own sisters and cousins. I unconsiously tuned in to that name and looked for it in my travels in the military and in the newspapers and books I read in great numbers. When I was tipped off to this site by one of my five sisters, I thought after reading through the guest book, that no one had made mention of a couple of Baumbachs that made the history books. One was Werner Baumbach, who was a major strategist and commanding officer in the the air war for Germany in World War 2. Another Baumbach who distinguished himself was Harland L. Baumbach, who was among those reieving a scientific and technical award in the 1957 Academy Awards for his contribution in developing an automatic printer light selector. I'm sure there must be more Baumbachs out there that have made their mark in the archives of various histories. So it might be interesting if some of the Baumbachs, could share their knowledge on this site of other Baumbachs that have distinguished themselves in some way.I read in an advertisement for the rodeo held on on the fourth of July week-end, 2004, at Mark Twain Lake in Missouri, the results from the 2003 rodeo, and it turned out a guy named Dustin Baumbach and his partner had won the team roping event. So we know at least one of the Baumbach clan turned out to be a cowboy. That was my dream growing up, but it ended when they took Roy Rogers and Gene Autry and Wild Bill Hickock off of Saturday morning TV. This site has made my day , it is too much to absorb in one visit so I will be coming back alot. Thanks email:

I don't know much about him, or relatives on his side, but do remember stories about our german descent, and how the spelling of our last name was changed by the immigration officials. My Aunt is doing a family tree, maybe you could get together and share information. email: rco3662@yahoo.com CommentsHello one and all, Greetings form Wisconsin! I am Robert Carl Olson, grandson of Carl Paul Lincoln Baumbach. My aunt Jeannie (Baumbach) Jahnke, gave me this web address, and ever since I have been obsessed with my Baumbach heritage. First, I would like to thank William James Baumbach II for this website. I never knew that there were so many Baumbachs around the world. The information presented here is just great! The information on Tannenberg castle, and the possibility of having family there is absolutely extraordinary! I am excited beyond words! I have a very deep passion for Germany; I was stationed there for 2 ½ years while I was in the U.S. Army in the early 80’s. I became very active in the community where I was stationed…Babenhausen. I played in the city orchestra, and spent all of my free time in the company of my German friends. Now, twenty years later I find that my attempt to trace our family history dead ends in Darmstadt Germany. I was very well acquainted with Darmstadt while I was stationed nearby…and I was not aware that my great, great grandfather Carl Baumbach came from there. At any rate, we are looking to trace things as far back as possible, and hopefully within the walls of Tannenberg. The fartherst we can find is Carl Baumbach, born 04 FEB 1850 in ,,,, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany, and died 14 DEC 1931 in ,, Fall Creek, Eau Claire Co, WI, USA. He was buried 17 DEC 1931 in St. James Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Fall Creek, Eau Claire Co, WI, USA. He married Fredricke WOLTER 1872. She was born 23 JAN 1850 in ,,,, Holstein, Germany, and died 09 NOV 1939 in ,, Fall Creek, Eau Claire Co, WI, USA. She was buried 12 NOV 1939 in St. James Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Fall Creek, Eau Claire Co, WI, USA. A couple of further facts: Carl Baumbach was a Lutheran Pastor at St. James Trinity Lutheran Church, Fall Creek, WI. Carl Baumbach immigrated to the U. S. in 1867. I would appreciate any and all help in tracing this back further. I also have one more question. Does anyone have a description of the symbolism of our family crest? I am curious to learn what is behind the symbols that make up the crest. I have searched high and low, but I came up empty handed. Well, thank you all, and I look forward to meeting some of you in the future. Bob Olson email: jbflytyer@earthlink.net CommentsJames Baumbach Son of Dale G. This picture was taken in London, England 3 days before he died. Buffalo Bill sent it to my father also [to] advise [him of] his death". George Frederick Baumbach was employed on one of the European Tours of W. F. Cody's Wild West Show. Buffalo Bill toured Europe in 1887, 1889, and in 1903, a joint tour with Barnum & Bailey's Circus. George's brother, Charles Baumbach supposedly worked for the Barnum & Bailey Circus. email: BRussell@LeonardOnline.net CommentsI am the daughter of a Baumbach, now living in Texas. tresselle@msn.com CommentsMy name is Patricia Baumbach, daughter of John Joseph Baumbach, born in Melon, Wisc. Jul 7, 1909. He was the oldest of many children but some died at birth. Living siblings were James, George, and sisters Margaret and Clara. The whole family moved to Riverside, CA., approx 1915. My father's father was Joseph John Baumbach who came to America from Germany when he was six yrs old (approx,. 1883), with his father whom I believed to be William Baumbach but not sure because I cannot find any records of them entering the US. All I know is they settled in and around Melon, WI. From reviewing all the e-mail messages in your system, about half the people came from a man called William who came here from Germany so there must have been a lot of Williams. tarfm@hotmail.com CommentsGreat site that I just discovered. I am related to same part of the Baumbach clan as history book visitor Zeta Peterson. Her Grandfather Lorenz was a brother of my Grandmother, Margaretha Caroline (in later years she used Margaret). My Grandmother passed away in July of 2000. There is another sibling of her Grandfather and my Grandmother that was not mentioned in her posts. Our Grandparents' father William immigrated to the US from Canada after getting a woman pregnant and then failing to marry her. His parents in Canada, William and Carloine, soon after reported that he had died while away. That is why he has a grave in Canada with a very early date and one in Nebraska. The name of the child from that union escapes me right now, but she subsequently married and had a son, Jay Quartz. Jay spent years doing genealogy research in his homeland in Canada. He always wondered why there was so little information on his grandfather. Quite by accident, he discovered that there had been a decades-long deception. He has very extensive genealogical data on the Canadian side of the Baumbach's. I have lost contact with him but will see if I can locate him and provide a copy to anyone interested. -----Original Message----- Dear William, I hope, you don't mind of writing like this because my name is also Baumbach and I'm really surprised about our history. My name is Matthias Kay, I am born in East-Germany in Arnstadt in 1965, a small town near Erfurt. I grow up in Berlin where I studied Music. So I am a musician, now living for further studies in Rotterdam (The Nederlands), where I study Tango music and also play in a Tango band called Cuarteto Gotan. (on the picture at the guitar - this is a Tangoball at the "Café de Kroon" in Amsterdam) So far, so good. Sorry about my bad english...Oh yes I'm interested in this "Baumbach" domain. Tell me please, what I have to do. email: sven.baumbach@epost.de CommentsHello, I am Sven Andreas Baumbach from Würzburg/Germany. This page is very interesting. Nice to get some information about other Baumbachs all over the world. Do you know Rudolf Baumbach? He lived from 1840 to 1905 in Meiningen and was a rather famous German author. I hope that I can help anybody with this information. email: BIGPANTHER010@aol.com Commentsit is cool From:
Meissner Mark C [mailto: markm@mcm.com ] Hello William, Last year a man who lives in Newcastle upon Tyne in Britain contacted my cousins in IL to share some letters and documents that were passed down from his great grandmother, Martha Elizabeth whose maiden name was Meissner . Some of the documents referred to her as being from Neuterhausen and some from Tannenberg. At first it was thought that the Tannenberg meant the Tannenberg Battle site of the Russian defeat in 1914 in Poland as that reference is more easily found in literature. But when I investigated I discovered the translation was incorrect and that the Neutershausen was really Nentershausen. and the Tannenberg association made it clear. Some of the documents were letters from MY great grandfather Ludwig/ Louis Meissner (1837-1898) who emigrated to St Louis between 1855 and 1860. In 1861 he was in the Union Army (for six months) and ended up thereafter in Breese. Martha was married to a 'turner' from Wolfsanger Parish in Kassel in 1855 and several of the documents refer to that process, including her birth certificate from the Church in Nentershausen. She was born in 1832 and was considered a spinster. On one wedding document (they were married in Nentershausen) it refers to her as Martha Eliz Meissner of Tannenberg. Her Father was named as Burkhardt Meissner who was a Shepard or master Shepard depending upon translation. The godmother was the wife of Anton Jordan "lord of the manor' from Basterode (that being a suspect translation). I had at one point thought that the Manor referred to the Tannenberg itself but after reading of Baumbach's Ludwig I and the Landgreve of Hesse and that history I think that theory is false. But the fact that Martha was reffered to as 'from Tannenberg' shows some kind of connection. Also, there are siblings of Martha and Louis called Peter and Maria. I'm guessing that Peter was the oldest and Louis therefore had to emigrate as that was the norm at that time. I'm hoping to find if any Meissners are left in the area and am planning to go over to Nentershausen perhaps next year. I will of course become a member and hopefully convince others in the family to do likewise. Vincent Angus, the relative in Newcastle might also want to support the Tannenberg project. He has possession of the original letters and documents. I think that Tannenberg or Nentershausen might be interested in some of them and I.am going to try and determine that when I go over. Vincent said he wanted to meet me there so he could bring the related documents over with him. They are very impressive , what with their seals and such.. Well, sorry to take so much of your time but I was very excited to see that there was a Tannenberg society. Mark Meissner ----Original Message----- I want to contact our cousin in Newcastle and my cousins in Breese to add some also. Thanks, You'll be hearing from me soon. Hoping to go there next year and am really excited. By the way, I found a genealogy referring to the Landgrave of Hesse (who evidently 'took over' Tannenberg from your family at some point) who was related to the Counts of Louvain and Brabant, and to the Percy family in Northumberland who figured significantly in English history and are major players in Shakespear's history plays. email: kay.baumbach@web.de CommentsHello my name is Kay Baumbach. -----Original Message----- Some time ago my sister sent me the info on the castle, and I just had time to look at it. My maiden name is Baumbach of Milw., WI. My great great grandfather, Gustavus Baumbach married Marie Zarnow. I barely remember him but he immigrated from Germany and spoke only German. He passed away when I was about 5 back in about 1965. My grandfather was Gerhard Gustavus Baumbach and he had one sister Elsie. My dad was Charles Gerhard and he died in 1990. How can I find out if I am related to anyone associated with the castle, and the original ownership? I am now married to a Baty and live in Colorado. Please send me some info and how to go about finding more info. I have limited computer time due to my kids, but now my curiosity is goanna get the best of me. thanks. email: Annett-Baumbach@gmx.net |
